A Googleday Showdown!

Today is June 21st. What does that mean to you? More importantly, what does it mean to Google? Depending on where you live, you’ll have two distinct answers. It’s no coincidence that these two logos are going head-to-head today: they represent the two major schools of thought behind Google logos.

In select Northern Hemisphere countries, Google is airing a Father’s day themed logo. This logo represents a “summer blockbuster” of a Google logo: it’s frilly, brightly colored, and doesn’t require much internal thought to be processed. It’s physically larger than its competing logo, and it’s almost certainly being viewed by a larger audience.

While in the Southern Hemisphere, Google is airing this First Day of Winter piece:

If ”Happy Father’s Day” is the summer blockbuster, “First Day of Winter” is the low-budget indie film with Oscar buzz. Substantially more intellectual than “Happy Father’s Day,” this piece takes a bleak, existential look at loneliness and despair in the postmodern digital age. That lone orange leaf alone holds more meaning than all the sand castles in the world.

Ultimately, neither logo has the inventive execution that made logos like this an integral part of the Google experience. Nor do they provide us with insight into an obscure anniversary or pivotal moment in scientific history. I guess the old saying is true: a good Google Logo in the hand is worth two crummy Google Logos in the bush.
