Anniversary of the ‘Miracle of Berne’

I’m sure many of you were expecting Happy Googleday to examine today’s American 4th of July Google Logo, but clearly enough has been said on that subject by the more ‘mainstream’ Google Logo critics.

Instead, I want to take a look at this little gem, brought to us by the Gügle team over in Germany. I don’t know what the ‘Miracle of Berne’ is, and in fact I was about to skip over this piece and talk about how the baseball hat in today’s Independence Day logo represents male opression. That’s when it caught my attention that the artist’s decision to punch out the ‘o’ and ‘g’ in this picture created the word “GOLE.” It’s exactly the kind of clever wordplay and use of negative space that made German art school rejects internationally known in the 1940s.

Well done, Google. Or, as they say in Germany, “Bravo.”

Today’s Rating: GOOGL (out of a possible GOOGLE)
