The Roundup: June 2009

Here’s a look at some of the logos Happy Googleday chose not to feature for the month of June 2009.

150th Anniversary of Yokoma Port Opening: A beautifully rendered image, which we simply chose not to review out of an insatiable hatred for the Japanese. Rating: GOOGL (out of a possible GOOGLE).

Denmark’s National Day/Sweden’s National Day: A classic example of Euro-Google’s laziness and inability to create original concepts. Still, both logos are rather pleasing to the eye, and they provide a welcome change from the standard retina-burning Google color scheme. Rating: GOO (out of a possible GOOGLE).

Alexander Pushkin’s Birthday: Minimal, stylized, and a fitting tribute to the founder of Russian literature. Too bad I don’t know who this guy is. Rating: GOOG (out of a possible GOOGLE).

Philippine Declaration of Independence: originally I thought this was a “Doodle 4 Google” entry from a third grader with a below-average reading level. You can imagine my shock when I discovered that this was made by an adult. Perhaps the Philippines don’t deserve their independence after all if they’re going to use their freedom to make such crummy Google Logos. Rating: G (out of a possible GOOGLE).

Opening of the Acropolis Museum: Competently drawn, but this Google Logo falls into the all-too-common trap of replacing the two “o”s with something that isn’t even remotely O-shaped.

Rating: GO (out of a possible GOOGLE).

Seven Sleepers Day: I had to look up Seven Sleepers day, and I actually ended up learning something about German culture. It’s not an all-time classic, but Google should consider implementing a few more simple well-balanced, readable logos like this one to balance out the recent avant-garde trend they’ve been facing. Rating: GOOGL (out of a possible GOOGLE).

Overall Rating for the month of June: GOOG (out of a possible GOOGLE)
